Jeon Hae-Sook

Abstract
This study aims (1) to examine the associations between types of stress and psychological well-being as well as the associations between coping mechanism and psychological well-being, and (2) to examine the interaction effect between types of stress and coping mechanism on psychological well-being. This study uses a convenience sample of 155 elders aged 85 and over who live in the community independently. The findings show that negative life events and daily hassles are significantly associated with negative affect of psychological well being. This indicates that the oldest-old experiencing more negative stress are likely to report more unhappiness. On the contrary, positive life events are significantly associated with happiness. Also, coping mechanism on daily hassles are related with happiness, indicating that elders who cope with emotion-focused mechanism presented more positive affect. The result on the interaction effect show that elders who cope with emotion-focused mechanism report lower levels of negative affect regardless of the types of stressors. These findings indicate that the intervention strategies for two dimensions of psychological well-being should vary, as positive affect and negative affect of the oldest-old are independent.
